Reading Readiness Questions and Defined Terms

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. The word “dyslexia” comes from the Greek/Latin roots “dys” meaning difficulty, and “lexia” meaning word. Dyslexia means difficulty with words. Individuals with dyslexia have difficulty learning how to read and spell due to a phonological weakness which makes it challenging to connect speech sounds with written symbols.

What does the ‘Science of Reading’ refer to?

The Science of Reading is an extensive body of research that explains how the brain learns to read and write. This research tells us that children need explicit, systematic instruction in phonics and multiple opportunities to practice those skills.

What does it mean to decode?

Decoding is an essential skill for early readers. To decode is to figure out an unfamiliar word by looking at letter patterns to help sound it out.

Why is comprehension so important?

Comprehension helps readers make meaningful connections to stories, articles, and books. To comprehend while reading is to understand what is being read and to hold onto what is happening in a story or nonfiction text.

Why are high frequency words included in decodable readers?

High frequency words are difficult to sound out but are used often, such as, “the,” “said,” “of,” and “they.” These are included in decodable books to move the story along in natural language.

What does reading with fluency mean?

Reading with fluency is the ability to read smoothly with accuracy and expression. Reading proficiently, without excessive pausing, allows readers to comprehend the story/text.
